Topalov Toppled Tournament

Veslin Topalov, one of the most feared chess players, claimed the Linares 2010 title today.

Linares is a Super-Grandmaster chess tournament held in Spain each year that consists of ten rounds of Round-Robin style format (each player plays the same opponent twice, once with the white pieces, and once with the black).

Finishing with 6.5/10.0 points in a tough field, Topalov yet again shows his superiority amongst the "wizards" of chess.

Here is his final game against Boris Gelfand in which he clinches the title (an impeccable display of endgame finesse):

  1. I have no idea what makes an amazing chess move, but I'll take your word for it! I'm sure my brother would be impressed.

  2. Game was over after

    21. ... Qe2

I think that should have been given blunder status, for sure. Much stronger would have been,

    21. ... Re5

Gives central board control with pressure on the H file pawn, the ability to swing the other rook into the action on the E file.

    If white responds with
    22. Bf4

then Black has equalized, I feel, with
    22. ... Rd5

Good technical end game, but the game was over well before that.
